Student As Makers
Students As Makers (SAM) is a hands-on, project based initiative housed within the UConn Innovation Zone. It is designed to guide students through the entire lifecycle of an idea; from initial concept to a physical prototype. SAM assists students in designing and developing original projects by providing technical resources and mentorship, and encourages making through the use of the Innovation Zone’s specialized equipment. Students participate in both one-on-one and group sessions to receive tailored guidance on their projects, while connecting with campus partners to ensure they have the resources they need.
SAM aims to be a collaborative environment where students can experiment, fail forward and ultimately build impactful projects through:
- Dedicated mentorship: Students work in groups throughout the majority of the program, with dedicated mentorship from SAM Program Coordinators and Innovation Zone Maker Specialists.
- Technical workshops: Students participate in a variety of disciplines, learning making through 3D Printing, laser cutting, woodworking and more.
- Resource coordination: SAM Coordinators aim to connect you with campus partners to ensure you have what you need to succeed.
- Entrepreneurial growth: Beyond just building, SAM encourages students to think about the broader potential impact of their work, fostering skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
The SAM program is more than just access to equipment; it is a commitment to project progression and experiential learning. Join a community of innovators who are dedicated to making, learning, and bringing ambitious ideas to life.
